Speaking as someone born in the last years of a dictatorship, you Americans are already several steps in one.

Ferdinand Marcos’ greatest trick was convincing people all protesters were communist animals, so when they went missing, few cared. Even after bodies were discovered.

These white people & journalists talking about being civil? These were the rich people, the Fil-Chinese, the mestizos in the Philippines who knew they won’t be affected by many of Marcos’ policies, and therefore could ignore them even as the killings started.

Marcos was also adept at convincing regular Filipinos that “as long as you don’t commit crimes I won’t come for you. I’m only getting rid of the ‘filth’.” He lied, of course. He jailed his most vocal opponents, people whose businesses he wanted to confiscate for his use.

But Filipinos have always been susceptible to strongman personality cults, just like your Republicans.

(Yeah don’t @ me on this one, Repubs still singing Reagan’s praises despite the fact he was FRIENDS with Marcos and helped him retain power, making it 1000x worse for us.)

White people, journalists who insist on civility- you seem to think civility is a common ground you share with opponents like Trump et al. Here’s a clue - whenever you offer these assholes middle ground, they will invade that space & then claim you never gave them ground at all.

Marcos kept pushing. First it was all protesters were communists. All student protesters. Then it was the free press. Then it was the people with businesses he coveted. And then it was anyone who looked at Imelda Marcos or his daughter, Imee, wrong. Arrested, raped, murdered.

And every step of the way there were the same kind of fuckwits here twittering on about how people should be civil, SURELY Marcos wouldn’t go that far, the economy is flourishing surely it can’t be THAT bad.

“It didn’t happen to ME, so it must not be bad.” up till Martial Law.

White people asking for performative civility do the same thing they did, for the same reason - they’re afraid. You’ve never been raised to fear discrimination or prejudice against a system that has always been built in your favor for centuries.

Your argument for civility is a terrified lashing out against an uncertain future that your ancestors / fellow white people have subjected people of color to for centuries. It’s built in POC culture to learn how to cope with this. You’ve had none, because you’ve never needed to.

Because regardless of whether you want it or not, status quo benefits white people best. In any upheaval, white people have the least casualties. That makes them the last demographic wanting to rock the boat, even if the boat is full of Nazis steering it straight into Auschwitz.

Because you know Auschwitz isn’t going to be for you. It’s gonna be Auschwitz for a lot of people in that same boat you’re on, but you know that’s not for you. And that’s why you can afford to be compliant.

And here’s the kicker: YOU KNOW THEY’RE NOT CIVIL. That’s why it’s the liberals you keep appealing to for decorum and politeness. You know you’re not going to get most Trumpsters on board anything amounting to basic decency.

So you shift the goalposts, and you enable the gaslighting, even if inadvertently. “Maybe if YOU hadn’t been so rude they wouldn’t have done that.”

Bullshit. You KNOW they’ll do it anyway because again, your goddamn status quo.

People invested in putting kids in cages don’t want your civility. They don’t want you to extend them the same courtesy they never had - and never wanted - from you. What they want is for you to retreat.

And every ground you grudgingly give, hoping that they’ll construe that as some good faith on your part, is only an incentive for them to push harder until you have no ground left.

Then they’re going to tell you they’ve owned the land all along.

“So much for the tolerant left.” This is why they say this all the fucking time. This is the bait they expect you to fall for. Your required “tolerance” for the things they do, even as they do the exact opposite to you.

The first requirement when approaching any discussion with civility is that both sides must come to the table with it. The side that advocates putting kids in cages and are now thinking of stripping citizenship from legal green card holders, never had that to begin with.

Now: if you are REALLY invested in still keeping civil after this, there are countless unaffiliated Red Hen places in the US (+one in Canada) being egged, getting death threats, etc.

Try discussing “civility” with those people this time, & see how well that works out for you.

Some Narrative/Storytelling tips from an wanna-be writer

Use interesting character names

Why name your character Sarah when you could name her something more complex and memorable like Lexington or Hazel? Basic run-of-the-mill names come across as boring and are likely to make your character more bland as a result. There’s a reason that people remember Katniss and Peeta over Sophie and Josh. Also, you can add name symbolism to enrich your themes and characters. In Siddhartha, the main character shares a first name with the famous Buddha and the themes of philosophy and religion are that much more complex. (Plus it’s a cool Easter egg)

Use Symbols and Motifs (that are relevant to the plot/theme)

These can be anything, from religious symbols to ancient civilization motifs, heck even death. In Croak, the main plot is centered around the idea of death and the afterlife so symbols like black hoods, scythes, and even death puns are littered throughout the series. In Kill la Kill (manga not book but whatever), scissors, thread, and clothes are used to relate to the plot of sailor uniforms and fashion (as well as deep symbols to the themes). You want to give your book a vibe instead of a hodgepodge of different ideas and themes stacked on top of one and other. Be focused and direct with your setting and symbols.

Strike a balance between introspection, dialogue, and description

The worst thing, personally, for reading old classic novels is that there is so little dialogue and character interaction. Almost everything is description or character introspection which can be a drag to get through. On the other hand however, barely anyone wants to read straight scripts with only dialogue. There needs to be a healthy balance between the three to get a good feel for the characters, the setting, and the relationships and bonds.

Don’t be so blatant with your themes

Nothing’s worse than having a character bring up deep philosophical conversation in the middle of a casual conversation. Your theme, if you include one, should integrate seamlessly into your story and should really be shown rather than told. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is an anime that accomplishes sliding philosophical thought into conversation to great effect while still feeling natural. There also shouldn’t be a huge time stopping conversation spilling all your themes out at once. Take it slow and make it meaningful, not some gaudy piece of crap.

*These are just a few things I’ve noticed! Of course there are exceptions and this isn’t the end-all-be-all when it comes to good storytelling. Feel free to add more!

This is worse. Looking at these you can tell they have no significant monetary value. They were confiscated as a fear tactic. Nothing more.

This picture breaks my heart everytime it appears in my dash. It’s a fear tactic, alright but—

The first one in the left corner: It’s a first communion rosary, and it’s not cheap.

The black one in the first line: That’s a widow rosary and it’s old.

The white one in the second line:  is a commemoration rosary. It has a miniature picture in the round part. I haven’t seen that since the 70′s.

In the third line, multicolor one: It’s an Anima mundi, I have only seen those in the hands of Rosary ministery’s old ladies. The oldest ones are from the 80′s after Juan Pablo II came to Mexico for the first time. It’s one of the old ones, I know because the crucifixes are different.

The third one on the fourth line: Red and gold. The style is old, the metal is dark, that’s a 50′s rosary, probably a quinceañera one (or it’s maybe older, from the 40′s when the brides carried red roses with their offerings).

The fifth one on the fourth line: It’s a quinceañera rosary with Ignatius’s tear. The style is old and in my part of Mexico is orphan girls who used it. At least it was when I was young.

The third one of the fifth line: the blue one with the anchor. That one I have only seen in Veracruz and it doesn’t look new.

The fifth one on the fifth line: That’s a 90′s wedding rosary. Black and white patterns were popular on that date.

The fourth one on the last line: That’s a first communion rosary from the 30′s. It’s delicate and most probably silver.

The rest wrench my heart too, the humble everyday rosaries with wooden beads and knots. Those are cheap and bear the wear and tear of their user handling. But those  I described are much more.

Those are mother’s rosaries.

Those are not just rosaries. Those are mementos, that’s the proof of their families stories. They are taking from them the only portable things they can carry to feel the connection to their families.

It’s not a fear tactic. Call it like by its name.

It’s dehumanization.

thievesguilding

honestly if you want to take proper care of your goths you shouldn’t take them outside in hot weather at all, just winter and MAYBE late autumn/early spring if you live in a cool climate

people really should do this kind of research before getting goths at all but as long as they’re willing to learn and adapt i guess

mickleburger

there are breeds of goth suitable for warmer climes but you have to be very careful when looking for one and you cannot assume that your goth is one of them if you don’t know for sure what they are

thievesguilding

even the warm-climate breeds still usually do better in their native locale’s winter temperatures though, and shouldn’t be left outside in the summer unattended or, at the bare minimum, they should be given plentiful shade, cold water, and appropriate music to keep them calm

corvidobligation

Honestly, if you want something less fragile than a goth, you should be considering something like a punk anyway. There’s no need to expose goths to the heat, IMHO. Admittedly there’s differences you need to do research on, but punks are very rewarding. And for God’s sake, if anyone tells you ANY emo can handle the heat, run. They don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

thievesguilding

goths aren’t fragile though? they’re not heat-tolerant but they’re extremely hardy in dark and stormy weather, metal concerts, and dramatic emotional episodes. just because they aren’t well-suited to one weather pattern doesn’t mean they can’t be extremely hardy and rewarding to keep under conditions they’re better suited to.

wetwareproblem

Forget the climate thing, there’s a more important husbandry issue here:

WHO THE FUCK PUT THEM OUT IN THE DAYTIME?

Direct sunlight is extremely harmful to goths! THey should never be outdoors before twilight!

Do your damn research, people.

thievesguilding

you’re missing a key point though

goths need the opportunity to complain about sunlight, it’s vital to their wellbeing; as long as their time in it is carefully controlled and they’re given sufficient sunscreen and shade, it can be amazing and 100% necessary enrichment

wetwareproblem

Look at that picture. Look at it. Please tell me where the shade is, because I don’t see any. I see two goths wilting in direct sunlight. Just look at how flat their hair is! This is not even remotely acceptable care.

thievesguilding

i never said the picture was a good example of goth husbandry, i think it’s sort of taken as a given that it’s not - nobody in this threat is endorsing it, op included

i’m just saying that it isn’t a black and white issue

wetwareproblem

Fair enough. I’ll concede that a properly-shaded porch or sunroom-type area can help them get the outdoor enrichment and complaining opportunities they need, without putting them at risk of direct sunlight or actually touching anything outdoors. But be careful not to overexpose them.

skyheartstar13

Aren’t there some varieties of goth that are built for sunlight, or is that me mistaking a similar species for goths?

wetwareproblem

You’re thinking of either New Romantics - unfortunately presumed extinct, you could tell them apart by their lack of Victorian plumage and occasional colouration - or Emos, which are the product of a crossbreeding with Shoegazers.

The fact that Sanders still maintains that money in politics is the greatest issue facing this country just demonstrates how little he’s learned from 2016. We’re in a county with centuries of ingrained systemic racism that is manifesting in the most vile ways across our country, babies are being ripped from their parents and entire groups of people are being called gang members and criminals, our president unapologetically espouses white nationalism and neo-Nazism, his administration routinely lies to the American people with no discretion, the White House is arguing for people’s right to discriminate against LGBTQ people and has tried to put in place a ban on transgender servicemen and women, and our culture of sexual harassment and violence is reaching a boiling point in which the president will tweet out sexually suggestive messages about sitting US senators and has been caught on tape bragging about sexual assault. Our country is in crisis and very serious, intricate conversations need to be had about our deep-seated biases. But yes, tell me more about how campaign finance is the key to all of our troubles.

Everyone knows that on Uber/Lyft you should always give the driver five stars unless they, like, drive the car into the ocean or something, right?  You can’t say “the ride was fine, nothing special, so I gave them three stars,” because the company will punish them for being anything less than perfect.

Well, you should know that the same rule goes for any kind of customer service survey.  Unless the service you received was unacceptable, give them 5/5 or 10/10 or whatever.  It’s annoying, because it ruins the sensitivity of the survey, but it’s how it’s gotta be.  9/10 gets treated like a problem and 6/10 gets treated like a disaster.   Understand this and do the workers a favor by grading easy.

Hey, I hate being that person; Signal boost if you can

I honestly really hate asking people for money, especially when I can’t give anything in return; but Me and my roommate/best friend got kicked ut of their grandfather’s house, it was horrible and traumatic, he got in our faces and screamed slurs at us because we couldn’t make it to a funeral due to their liscense being suspended.

We basically had less than 12 hours to grab everything we could and get out as fast as we could. He ended up calling me transphobic slurs and punching my best friend in the face. They currently have a knot and bruise on their jaw, we had to get police involved and we had just finished paying bills and currently, we have no money to our name and found a safe place a good almost hour away from him.

But this is where I ask from you guys something I hate to do;

My laptop is broken, my job has cut my hours due to summer, and my bestfriend has recently lost their job all the day before this happened.

We need money for food, as we do not have any, and the person we are living with, their grandmother from their mom’s side, doesn’t have much either. This is only to get us on our feet and have enough to feed us.

Please, paypal us even a dollar here; ednygma@yahoo.com

Even with just a dollar, it will help us greatly.
